• Marriage: Leonara "of the Cape. 1 2

• Marriage. 3 This Source has a tree showing a Schonken marrying a "Classe" and since Alice Kitchings started her Scrapbook in 1863 I think this is a confirmation of Leonara's probable name now shown as "Claasz Unknown" For this reason the term "Unknown" is hereby dropped.

• Slave or vryswarte List & Related: Bartholomeus Schonken's wife Leonora Claasz is listed as Leonora van de Kaap/ Caap/ Caab i, 1723, South Africa. Bartholomeus Schonken's wife Leonora Claasz is listed as Leonora van de Kaap/ Caap/ Caab in some genealogical tables, so our 5X great grandmother was also a vryswarte. It is possible that her father, only known as Claasz, was a freed slave from Bengal, India, as there is a person of this name in the DEIC records.v From all this detail we can assume that the Schonken family were Dutch-speaking vryswarte. We are now several generations later, and those of our ancestors who were from Africa and Asia were few. Bartholomeus and Leonara Schonken were only two out of 128 5x great grandparents descended from slaves, although there were undoubtedly others. Figure 2 outlines the family of Johanna Anderson. • Alt Venue. Jan-Willem Schonken advised Venlo Nederlands as a new venue for the marriage instead of Cape Town that I had entered before.
