• Emigration, 1723, Venlo Or Vindello. ^{1 2} According to Edward, Venlo is in Holland (Netherlands) but Vindello cannot be found.
Subsequently, Jan-Willem Schonken wrote that he arrived in 1723 from Venlo, Limburg, Netherlands as a "bosschieter"

• Slave or vryswarte List & Related: Listed on Slave List - Named as free slave vryswarte, 1723, South Africa. Bartholomeus Schonken, is listed in the "Wills and Testaments of Slaves and Free Blacks" in the year 1775, the year after he died. He is the grandfather of Johanna Schonken.

Bartholomeus Schonken's wife Leonora Claasz is listed as Leonora van de Kaap/ Caap/ Caab in some genealogical tables, so our 5X great grandmother was also a vryswarte. It is possible that her father, only known as Claasz, was a freed slave from Bengal, India, as there is a person of this name in the DEIC records.v From all this detail we can assume that the Schonken family were Dutch-speaking vryswarte. We are now several generations later, and those of our ancestors who were from Africa and Asia were few. Bartholomeus and Leonara Schonken were only two out of 128 5x great grandparents descended from slaves, although there were undoubtedly others. Figure 2 outlines the family of Johanna Anderson.

• Alt Marriage Place. According to data supplied by Jan-Willem Schonken in October 2011, he was married to Leonora Claasz on 30 Aug 1733 in Venlo, Limburg, Netherlands, and not in South Africa as previously thought.

• Alt Venue. Jan-Willem Schonken advised Venlo Nederlands as a new venue for the marriage instead of Cape Town that I had entered before.
