General Notes:
~These are notes on the life of Edith are from her daughter Patricia. Patricia wrote these after her death. These notes are from what Patricia remembers from her life growing up and from what she remembers her mother Edith telling her as she grew up~
Edith Bain Whitton (24 Dec 1902~ 1 Sep 2006)
Born in Monifeth, Angus, Scotland, Edith grew up at "Blythwood" 83 Seafield road Broughty Ferry, Angus, Scotland. She attended "Grove Academy" also on Seafield Road. She was the daughter of John Blyth Whitton and Helen Ferguson Thompson. She was the youngest daughter of 11 children. There was also a stillborn child, year of birth is unknown.Edith's grandparents were David Peter Whitton 1836-1920 and Jessie Blyth born 1937. David owned "Whitton's Emporium" in Dundee. It was handed down to Ethel, Laura, and Lizzie Whitton. Chris's grandchildren, upon his retiring, sold the business.
Edith told Patricia that as a child, her and her brothers would run down Seafield Road, Ringing doorbells all the way down the hill. Edith was somewhat a tomboy. She would climb trees ECT Edith was a nanny in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. But only for a short time. She talked about visiting Niagara Falls (Canada side).
Edith married Herbert Harold Lawson (year unknown, place unknown)
Edith was in the Gloucestershire, England during the war (Patricia thinks).
They adopted Patricia in 1946; the adoption was final in Feb 1947.
Edith and Herbert lived in Minchin Hampton, Gloucestershire, England. By the time Patricia was 15 months in age, Edith and Herbert were divorced.
Edith took a job as a housekeeper for William J Orchard, Who lived with his wife in Thrupp, Gloucestershire, England. She worked for him until his death in 1965.
In 1956, we all moved from Thrupp, Gloucestershire, England and lived at "Rockleigh" on Park Road in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England.
After Mr. Orchard's death, Edith moved back to Scotland to be near her family. She got a job for some Colonial, again as a housekeeper. Later for a lady closer to the city. Edith's sisters bought her a flat, a place of her own. She went into semi-retirement. She would clean homes a few hours a day. Edith had a poodle that she would walk everywhere, even to the beach which was down the road. Edith was an avid gardener and had her own little garden. She kept herself very busy. Edith also often did her laundry by hand.
Edith was able to stay in her home until she turned 100 years old, at which time she took a fall and was not strong enough to get herself up off the floor. She was, at that time, placed in a Saint Mary's Care Home. She had some short term memory loss, but her long term memory was still intact. Health wise, Edith was healthy all her life. When Patricia was a child, they were crossing the main London road in Thrupp, Gloucestershire, England, when a bicyclist missed Patricia and hit Edith, throwing her into a wall. She had a concussion and was in the hospital for 3 days. This was around the 1950's When Edith was around her 60's, she had surgery on her wrist to remove a cyst. Later she had a blocked bowel repaired and cataract surgery. Most illnesses were age related.
Edith had a very long, full life. On Sep 1 2006 she suffered a stroke and passed away peacefully.

My grandfather, Matthys Johan de Jager * 1872 told my mother about this Miss Cummings and how she died. She had her death outfit (shroud?) made and kept this in a hat-box which she then put on top of an huge clothes-cupboard in her bedroom. To do this she had to make use of a chair. Nearly every day she climbed onto the chair, took the hat-box down and spread the shroud out on her bed! This was to make sure that everything was in good order without any moths etc. And of course to medidate about the life hereafter. And then disaster struck! One day when she got onto the chair and was struggling to remove the hat-box with her thin and weakened arms (she was very lean) the chair tipped over and she had one mighty fall! The lady of the house found her on the floor, the doctor came and she was put in bed, but she never recovered and died the next days or several days later. But as she intended, no one had to struggle to get a shroud, she had hers with her in the room! Apparently my grandfather never blinked an eye when he told this story, and the kids didn't know whether they could laugh or not -- so they never laughed!
