• Historical. ¹ In his e-mail dated 27 Oct 07 Eric Lawton gave still more data on his families as follows:-"Two other Edwards children married Lawtons.
1] Catherine [Kate] Edwards [b.1837 in Cape Town; d.19 Nov 1892in Sea Point, Cape Town] married Thomas Hindle Lawton [b. Feb 1835 in Cape Town; d.5 Feb 1896 in Cape Town]
2] Lucy Harriet Edwards [b. 1848-49 in Stellenbosch; d.1938 in Wynberg, Cape] married Benjamin Theophilus Lawton [b. Jan 1837 in Cape Town; d.8 Jul 1916 in Glencairn, Cape Town]. They married on 30 Mar 1876. She was his second wife, the first being Johanna Francina Russouw [b.1834; d.1869]
Benjamin and Johanna are my great grandparents.
The Lawtons mentioned were the children of Joseph Lawton [b.1897 in England; d.6 Jul 1876 in Rondebosch, Cape Town] and Elizabeth Hindle [b.1793/94 in Norfolk, England; d.1863 in Cape Town.
Joseph Lawton came out to the Cape in 1821. He, and the two sons mentioned, Thomas Hindle and Benjamin Joseph became very well known as coppersmiths in Cape Town from about 1822 to the 1880's.[see "The Cape Coppersmith" by Marius le Roux]
